Sloping white sand beaches caressed by the foamy blue-green waves of the Sea of Cortez is what La Paz, Baja California Sur is most known for. This sun-baked paradise on earth can be found on the southern region of the Baja California peninsula and is currently the state capital of Baja California Sur. The city of La Paz is situated between a range of coastal mountains and the large, biologically-diverse water form known as the Gulf of California (or the Sea of Cortez as the locals prefer to call it). It is along the shores of this majestic body of water that La Paz beaches of all types and sizes are found.

The Playa La Paz (La Paz beach) is definitely one of the many beaches in La Paz that you should visit at least once in your lifetime. Playa La Paz is actually located right at the shores of the La Paz municipality, making it a convenient and hassle-free escape to local La Paz residents and ex-pats working in the city. The Playa La Paz directly faces the expansive Sea of Cortez, treating late afternoon swimmers to a colorful spectacle of the setting sun and the glimmering waves.

There are also some beaches in La Paz that have interesting histories. During the time of colonizing conquistadors and visiting missionaries, pirates and buccaneers were known to sail and sometimes to take shelter along the shores of La Paz. Treasure beach is a small inlet in La Paz that is called as such because of an incident that happened more than forty years ago. A highway was being constructed near the beach site when construction workers stumbled upon a buried treasure. The news of the treasure spread and the beach was soon called by everyone as treasure beach.

Of course, a tropical tourist hot spot such as La Paz will not be complete without a couple of private beach resorts. La Concha beach resort is a private vacation spot that many locals and tourists visit when they want to have some relaxing time under the sun. The Bahia de la Ventana is another beach that is located just 20 miles to the south of La Paz. This picturesque beach is perfect for lovers and honeymooners because this secluded beach is usually not crowded.

If you want to enjoy one-of-a-kind natural wonders, there are plenty to be seen in La Paz beaches. The Playa Balandra found in the Northeast of downtown La Paz features a stunning mangroves amidst a blue-green waterscape. The Playa Telecote on the other hand, has crystal clear waters where small colorful fishes frolic about. This beach is great for scuba diving, snorkeling and sports fishing.
