Fishing has been a principal source of livelihood in La Paz, Baja California Sur even in prehistoric times. Before conquistadors and missionaries have even glimpsed of the fine white sand beaches and the swaying laurel trees of La Paz, nomadic tribes use to wander aimlessly along the shores and desert mountain hills of La Paz fishing and searching for food. Although there are some fishes that are plentiful only in certain seasons, others can be found all year long. Thousands of dorados, Pacific sailfins, yellowfin tunas, and blue marlins can be found during the peak seasons of summer and spring because these fishes prefer warm waters. However, snappers, butter fishes and rooster fishes can be found in the surrounding waters of La Paz all year round.
